Genetically Mod.. Babies

Genetically Modified Babies [and more]

(no authorization needed to copy and distribute this article freely)

most of this article consists of quotes collected from other sources
along with a few comments of my own.          “World’s First GM Babies Born.”

The world's first genetically modified humans have been created, it was revealed last night. The disclosure that 30 healthy babies were born after a series of experiments in the United States provoked another furious debate about ethics. So far, two of the babies have been tested and have been found to contain genes from three 'parents'. Fifteen of the children were born in the past three years at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science of St Barnabas in New Jersey.1]

In case you didn’t believe it the first time, here is the story from another news source:

What this means is that due to inheriting these extra genes through the genetic modification process, they will now be
able to pass them along to their offspring
. In other words, these genetically modified babies — if allowed to mate
with non-GM humans — could potentially
alter the very genetic coding of generations to come
           [emphasis added...

From May, 2001:

According to the article by Will Dunham the process is no [sic] intended to transfer mitochondria, but rather
cytoplasm, which somehow triggers the infertile eggs to become fertile. Tests confirmed that two of the
babies produced by this technique at the St Barnabas Centre had DNA that was from neither the natural
mother or father. This has resulted in germline modification of the DNA of these children.

While few Americans would begrudge infertile couples the babies that have been produced
through IVF, the issues now being raised by genetic engineering are not ones to be taken lightly,
and a national consensus can only be arrived at through vigorous public debate.4]

This is an issue that ultimately affects the whole of society, not only the doctor and the few couples that are unable to conceive naturally but these children being born, their future spouses, their children and humanity. I don’t think this is a decision that should be made only by a few people yet they seem to have forgotten about the rest of us and how it could affect us. Now that the deed is already done, what remains?

This doctor says that he is trying to help those who are unable to have children. Tell me though, does he [and others who are genetically modifying organisms, food, animals and now people] seem to be thinking about the possible dangers to the rest of us when he has now introduced new genes and mutations into the human population and into the world? 15 babies were born in 2001. He cannot possibly know all of the potential dangers that this genetic modification could create in these babies and humans down the road yet it seems he has carelessly disregarded the rest of us, our future children and society for his own desires or gain.

Does he really have a regard for human life like he says? I don’t think so. He doesn’t seem to care what effects his modifications will have on future generations.

I think that these people and companies are trying to play God.

Did we not learn anything from the legend of Atlantis?

That is my personal opinion. What is yours?

“Designer babies: human cloning is a long way off [is it?] but bioengineered kids are already here.”

Please see the movie called Cloning a Human on at (TDF is a free site.)   The scientists feel that they need no permission to clone a human. Perhaps not, but what about how the rest of us feel about these clones or otherwise modified humans being added to the gene pool of humanity. What about just the fact that these doctors are experimenting with human lives. What would they do with the clones that were "unsuccessful" or "deformed" or ... This is more of an ethical question but it involves the whole of humanity not just those few scientists that wish to see if they can do it. Are you okay with the scientists wanting to try to clone humans?

Did anyone see anything about the subject of genetically modified babies on the news or in the papers? I didn’t. I found one of these articles on the internet, on the same day it appeared but I was looking for other information at the time.

I'm all for free choice but they didn't ask the rest of us if we wanted the gene pool altered in any way or that we want to take chances with human lives. What if these children have problems that don't show up for many, many years? Should they be allowed to have children? What about the potential for damage to humanity and society as a result of what they have done? There are all kinds of ethical questions and concerns yet they seem to be leaving the rest of us out of the decision.

Jacques Cohen, scientific director of the Institute, dismisses ethical concerns. Although the babies have been modified at the germline level by the addition of new mitochondrial DNA, Cohen comments "we haven't changed any genes."[5]

.....The hazards of germline transmission of DNA modification are no longer speculative; the literature on transgenic animals contains numerous examples. For example, germline introduction of an improperly regulated normal gene into mice resulted in progeny with no obvious effects on development, but enhanced tumor incidence during adult life. Such effects may not be recognized for a generation or more.[6]

Furthermore, introduction of a foreign gene into an inappropriate location in an embryo's chromosomes can have unexpected consequences. .. the offspring of a mouse that received an extra copy of a normally present gene, while appearing unaffected at birth, developed cancer at 40 times the rate of the unmodified strain of mice … mice that lacked eyes, the semicircular canals of their inner ears, and …. germline modifications can produce developmental disruptions in the manipulated embryo itself.[7]

The Council for Responsible Genetics therefore calls for a permanent ban on germline gene modification.[8]

While debate on germline gene therapy is still going on worldwide, geneticists have gone ahead. Prof. Joe Cummins and Dr. Mae-Wan Ho report on how scientists have sidestepped regulators and created the first GM human beings, despite fierce public opposition. [9]

Mitochondrial DNA mutations have been linked to seizures, strokes, optic atrophy, neuropathy, myopathy, cardiomyopathy, sensorineural hearing loss, diabetes mellitus, and other syndromes. Mitochondrial DNA mutations may also play an important role in aging, as well as in common age-related neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease [5]. Typically, mitochondrial diseases arise by single base pair changes in the coding regions for proteins or transfer RNA but some arise by short deletions. More often than not, the disease symptoms are delayed until puberty or midlife. [10]

Now is not the time to bring human germline therapy in through the back door and to promote it through claims of "success" which may be premature and announced after the experiments. Genetic engineering may be proceeding along the lines taken in the development of nuclear weapons. The scientific "elite" may have convinced the political "elite" that the masses need to be led like cattle to the brave new world.[11]

I found more...much more...only you can decide how you feel about these issues

One hundred and fifty animal-human hybrid embryos have been produced by mad scientists in the UK -- with full government approval -- …. a committee of scientists recently blew the whistle on the operation and expressed alarm …Sound like science fiction? It's actually just an extension of science fact: human-animal hybrids have been produced by these UK scientists for the last three years.  [from July, 2011]
Scientists have begun blurring the line between human and animal by producing chimeras—a hybrid creature that's part human, part animal. Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. …They were allowed to develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells. In Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood flowing through their bodies

In November of 2001, CNN reported that a human embryo was created through cloning. Even earlier, in 1999, the BBC reported on a human hybrid clone. And these are just the efforts the public is being told about. The technology has been around for decades and human clones have already been created.  Beyond that, there's the ultimately disturbing "scientific" trend of creating human-animal hybrids, or chimeras for "therapeutic" and other "important" reasons.

At the very least, I feel that we should all vote on whether these experiments and such are okay to proceed or not and the scientists should be bound by those laws and the feelings of the majority. Then, if they go against the wishes of the majority then they will have to live with the consequences. They do not seem to care what effect these experiements and such will have on us, our children or society. They seem to care only about themselves and they are not taking how the rest of the world feels about the situation into consideration. Let's have some resolution of this matter. The gene pool has already been tampered with and great harm may have already been done.

I just read a quote by Richard Dawkins, supporter of evolution, in an article. How do you feel about it?

If there were a heaven in which all the animals who ever lived could frolic, we would find an interbreeding continuum between every
species and every other. For example I could interbreed with a female who could interbreed with a male who could…fill in a few gaps,
probably not very many in this case…who could interbreed with a chimpanzee. We could construct longer, but still unbroken chains
       of interbreeding individuals to connect a human with a warthog, a kangaroo, a catfish. This is not a matter of speculative conjecture;
it necessarily follows from the fact of evolution. (ellipses in original)

     Richard Dawkins as quoted in

"The time will come - and it may not be far off - when quite different tendencies will come up at a congress like the one held in 1912 and people will say: It is pathological for people to even think in terms of spirit and soul.  'Sound' people will speak of nothing but the body.  It will be considered a sign of illness for anyone to arrive at the idea of any such thing as a spirit and - you can be quite sure of it - a medicine will be found for this.  At Constantinople the spirit was made non-existent.  The soul will be made non-existent with the aid of a drug.  Taking a 'sound point of view',  people will invent a vaccine to influence the organism as early as possible,  preferably as soon as it is born,  so that this human body never even gets the idea that there is a soul and spirit.

The two philosophies of life will be in complete opposition.  One movement will need to reflect how concepts and ideas may be developed to meet the reality of soul and spirit.  The others, the heirs of modern materialism,  will look for the vaccine to make the body 'healthy', that is, makes its constitution such that this body no longer talks of such rubbish as soul and spirit, but takes a 'sound' view of the forces which live in engines and in chemistry and let planets and suns arise from nebulae in the cosmos.  Materialistic physicians will be asked to drive the souls out of humanity."
The Fall of the Spirits of Darkness - Oct 7, 1917 (lecture 5)

How many of you think that our souls and our spirits are "rubbish" and that there is nothing more than this physical world and only what we can see?

How many of you think we are so much more than this body and this world?
