CHILD ABUSE
:  to get help or report abuse in the U.S. or Canada call the Childhelp National Abuse Hotline
at   1-800-422-4453 OR 1-800-4-A-CHILD

How do you know what is abuse and what is not abuse?

How does one know what is or is not appropriate especially if one
grows up with abuse and believes that it is normal?

What are verbal abuse, emotional abuse and other kinds of abuse?

Even our silence and inability to speak up could be abusive in some ways
to others who are able to be more open and honest.

Silence changes nothing, creates anger and resentment and erodes or destroys trust.

How do we learn to speak up when we were taught to be quiet and that our feelings or opinions didn't matter?

It is very hard to change old habits but they can be changed and you can learn to be stronger
so that you are able to speak up and communicate with others in life.
People cannot read our minds and so we have to speak up.

It is okay to have your feelings.
It is okay to speak up - otherwise nothing will change.

How does one stop the cycle of abuse?

How do we start to feel that we deserve to be treated better
instead of compromising our spirits for love and attention?

How do we start to treat others with respect and dignity as well as ourselves.

This goes for men and women.

“While most everyone understands the concept of rape, domestic violence and abuse, most people associate these problems with women. Unfortunately, they can also occur among the male population. In fact, there are many more cases than are known concerning domestic violence against men, charges of rape, molestation cases, and the like. Additionally, fathers who are going through a divorce or separation may need help when it comes to dealing with custody issues. “

Instead of waiting for someone to read your mind or figure out what you are thinking - how about asking them instead or letting them know what you are thinking?

Very few people can read minds. Instead of being frustrated, resentful, angry or something else because someone doesn't do what you want or need them to do - how about stating your feelings, your likes/dislikes, what you want or need?

Could go a long way to helping things be a little smoother and loving.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE
  (Youtube videos)

Being a victim is about feeling that one has no power.

Being abusive to others is about feeling that one has no power

or is afraid of something.

Feeling strong comes from inside and can be learned and felt

by anyone who wants to learn.

Power over others does not equal a strong character.

Fear can be overcome by learning internal strength, love, compassion and other skills.

Hargitay knew that something had to be done, so she started the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004.

The foundation’s mission is to heal, educate and empower victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse and to shed light on the darkness that surrounds these issues. The foundation has three main missions -- healing and wellness, advocacy and policy (where the organization works to help change the laws to support victims better) and education and awareness.

“Why are we blaming survivors when the blame and the stigma belongs to the perpetrator?” Hargitay asked.

Our mission is to heal, educate and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse, and to shed light into the darkness that surrounds these issues. We carry out this mission in three ways: Healing & Wellness, Education & Awareness and Policy & Advocacy. We conduct all our activities with the underlying spirit of collaboration, supporting and affirming existing services for survivors and efforts to end violence and abuse.
